Driving around the Canal du Midi

Driving around the Canal du Midi. We spent a few hours earlier this week exploring the area. Started at Neuf Ecluses de Fonseranes, where we saw the nine locks in action. Easy parking, and drinks/snacks available. Back in the car and along to Colombiers. Parked just by the bridge. Not much for us to see but there is a small modern harbour with a few places to eat.

Then along to Poilhes, gorgeous setting with ‘picture postcard’ views of the Canal. If we had wanted to go for a walk (too hot!) this would have been a great starting point. Parked by Les Platanes and had lunch there – delicious set menu, would highly recommend.

Then tried to visit Oppidum but it was closed (unfortunately we didn’t find this out until we got all the way to the top of the hill). Then also failed to visit the Malpas tunnel, and found ourselves driving along a canal towpath, so we turned back!

Our final stop was Capestang, a nice town with a beautiful church and a few simple places to eat in the main square. We parked outside the Hotel de ville. We had been recommended La Galiniere to eat, but it was closed (and we had already eaten!)
